Shakespeare said that art could be a tool for mankind to redeem itself. Like he was trying to find a reason, a solid & trascendental reason to write his plays and do the things he did. But then he wrote "The Tempest", in wich the conclusion may be that life has no meaning besides the big nothing, and when you figure that out, then along comes the chaos. The Tempest was first listed as one of Shakespeare's comedies, but the critiques and scholars studied it and listed better as a Shakespearean Tragicomedy Romance.
That was the last play he wrote, after wich he started drinking and died, drinking 4 years later.

I found all of this quite disturbing, i mean... art has no meaning after all? That's Shakespeare's conclution?
